I have been known to wander the Internet in search of new bands. This is a quest that has led me to discover many a gem. There has been an abundance of diamonds in amoungst the toilet fodder... And, today, I shall introduce you to one such diamond.

I came across Nadir's website this morning. I added the Googoth search engine to our front page and decided to type random words into it to see what it would come up with. I can't remember which random words brought me to Nadir, but I am now very thankful to them *goes to thank dictionary*

From what I can work out (and this could be wrong) Nadir are a Spanish metal band which was formed from the pieces of another band called Obscure (this is another band which I am going to have to have a listen to). The members of Nadir wanted to create a different sound in comparison to Obscure, they wanted to create slow and heavy music with "miserable melodies". If the MP3s are anything to go by, then they have definitely achieved this.

I found that quite a few bands sprung to mind when I listened to the first MP3, "So Tired". Vocally they sound not too dissimilar to Type O Negative and the tempo and general feel of that track reminded me of Novembre. This is a compliment from me since I feel that both of those bands are excellent (especially Novembre after their gig in... erm... November). There are some beautiful keys in this track and the great thing is that they manage to remain subtle throughout the track so that they don't become the main focus point of the music.

I'm going to give you a little taster of the lyrics from both of the tracks mentioned. Here's an extract from "So Tired":

"The soul that took my name awaits me
Staring from the door's frame
It awaits my time of weakness
When brains convulse the trembling limbs
And here it comes a vision sickening in sight
The dawn of light at such distressing hour

My temples throb overtaken
I'm so tired just can moan
I'm lying down waiting for a sign
Oh yeah i'm so tired"

Nadir

"Big Open Wound" was the second track I listened to (although I think it appears first on the site). It begins with an unobtrusive piano intro, which soon changes into the usual guitars, and drums that you'd expect from a metal band. I say 'usual' but, to be honest, Nadir are anything but this. Overall "Big Open Wound" is of a faster pace than "So Tired" and this is the reason that the guitars seem more evident here.

I particularly like the lyrics on this track. I find that they are sufficiently vague so that the listener can apply their own meaning to them. I like lyrics such as these since they can bring you closer to the music. Here's an extract from "Big Open Wound":

"One day will explode it all
Fill my universe with woes
A deep crack full of nothingness
The beast that shakes our souls

My mind can't seal the shooting memories
Big open wound my heart is
The tiny scraps of something real
Enough to make us sicken and so small
And so alone"

I'm sure I shall listen to these MP3s more and more over the course of time, and I shall definitely be purchasing a copy of their "Big Open Wound" album! I would recommend this band to anyone who likes chilled-out melodic metal in the vein of Novembre, Opeth and/or Katatonia. If you like those bands then I'm sure that you'll find a place for Nadir in your music collection.
