Everything&Nothing
Artist(s): Everything&Nothing, and Junkyard
Venue: The Cartoon, Croydon

This review has been a bit late in coming... This is purely because I'm lazy...

Sadly this date marks another time when The Cartoon wasn’t at full capacity. In fact, it was downright quiet. I would launch into a rant about how good the ‘Toon used to be and why people should go there, but this isn’t the place for it…

I arrived to find that there were only two bands playing tonight. Not ideal, but the bands and the promoters (Riddle Me This) did the best they could under the circumstances.

When Junkyard started I was instantly reminded of Nirvana… and Nirvana and Nirvana. The lads seemed to be very competent musicians, but they definitely need to find their own style. I remember turning to my friend and saying “I’d like to see this band in 5 years”. I said this because hopefully in 5 years (if the band is still together) they would have had the chance to listen to a few more bands and maybe expand their overall sound a little more. Are Junkyard in the running to be one of Croydon’s favourite bands? After tonight I’d say ‘no’…. After a few years, some experimentation and some more confidence onstage… Who knows? Very possibly.

I’d been waiting to see Everything&Nothing for quite some time. While they aren’t of a similar style as most of the bands I listen to (I’d say they were rock / hard rock), their song “Red” (available on MySpace) interested me. They stormed through a selection of songs (some of which I recognised from the website) and they seemed to be full of energy – especially singer Rob le’Cornu and guitarist John Ward. Rob managed to incorporate a number of little dance moves in between his vocals and, although he didn’t do it here, he does a wonderful ‘Axl sway’. I really enjoyed their set and I think this was mostly down to two reasons…
1. They were a lot heavier live than they are on recording. It really helped the metaller in me to enjoy the gig.
2. They really gave it their all. I got the impression that the really like to play these songs and that, in turn, made me enjoy listening to the songs.

Everything&Nothing played for 45mins and here is their set list:

If you like melodic hard rock then I urge you to get along to one of their shows! They have a couple of dates lined up (one in Camden and one in Croydon)...
