Corpsing
Corpsing - "Watching The Thinker"
Reviewed by: Lou

Corpsing CD Cover

Corpsing are a band from London which blend Death, Black, Thrash and Doom expertly. The band was formed by Giuseppe Cutispoto (ex Infestation) and this album, "Watching The Thinker", was engineered and recorded by Jason Mendoca (Akercocke) at the Goat of Mendes Studios.

Opener (also the album's namesake) "Watching The Thinker" gives you a gratefully received slap 'round the face and slightly prepares you for the onslaught that is to follow. There's an excellent groove throughout this track and I can imagine headbanging to my heart's content... or my neck breaks... Whatever happens first.

The next two tracks were the ones that really got me hooked on this album. "Mould" is home to some of the best lyrics I've witnessed in a while ("Repressed rage compressed into drug reliance / The quick caffiene fix / The steady flow of cancer sticks / The mix of alcoholic beverages that make you sick". The vocals on this track range from deep growls to the occasional shriek. This, of course, makes the lyrics very difficult to understand, and I feel that because I've had to read them from the booklet that I appreciate them a lot more. "Waistral" keeps a steady pace throughout (it's reminicent of 'old school' Death Metal in that respect) and has some great lead guitar. The clean lead guitar sounds really stand out against everything else. Again, I feel the need to mention the lyrics on this one. This track deals with the lengths some will go to lose weight and become 'desirable'.

"Born To The Faith" is a short hard-hitting track, which manages to leave you with a bemused look on your face along with the words "What the f*ck?".

"Inhale" is creepy and unnerving and will have you looking over your shoulder. It's completely different to the previous tracks, but it works so well.

After the relative (albeit creepy) tranquility of "Inhale", "Scum" is a shock to the system. It's almost like this is the thing that was creeping up behind you in the previous track and now it's got you... and has scared the life out of you in the process.

"P.r.i.e.s.t" has quite a mellow intro which lasts for around a minute before it launches into the assault on the ear drums that we have come to expect from this band by now. The track deals with the story of a priest who is also a paedophile and how it is wrong that he can hide behind his dog collar.

In my opinion, "Blistered Bliss" is less memorable than the other tracks on this album. Having said that, there are plenty of headbanging opportunities throughout.

"Senior Amoeba" brings Corpsing back up to their usual quality. This is an excellent track to throw yourself around a room to. The change in tempo at around the 5min mark is unexpected, but welcome (it also provides you with some time for your neck to recover... but it doesn't last long).

The album closes with "Exhale". This track returns to the paranoia-envoking feeling of "Inhale". This intrumental contains some relaxing guitar picking - a great end to the album.

Corpsing have created 10 tracks of music that you wouldn't want to meet in a cold dark alley in the middle of the night. It's loud. It's scary. It takes no prisoners. I've also found this album to be strangely hypnotic.

Another Corpsing album is due very soon...
